Yippie! Earth Hour Is This Weekend!
YHXEDWWM9HXH
Hi fellow Earth enthusiasts!
Do you know what happens this Saturday from 8:30-9:30 PM? No?!?! Halfa Sponge knows!
It’s Earth Hour!
To rip a line right off of the Earth Hour site,
On Earth Hour hundreds of millions of people around the world will come together to call for action on climate change by doing something quite simple—turning off their lights for one hour. The movement symbolizes that by working together, each of us can make a positive impact in this fight, protecting our future and that of future generations.
So easy, right? You just sign up on their website and commit to turning off your lights for 1 hour! Voilà!
What’s more, the Fuze Meeting team is enthusiastically participating – as a company and as individuals! (So, basically what I’m saying is that all the cool kids are doing it.)
In other news. They put together just about the coolest video I have ever seen . I’ve watched it about 6 times flipping that light switch off and on to watch this guy battle the aliens!
Did you sign up for Earth Hour? Let us know!
I’m signed up! Thanks Halfa!
Why does the sponge hate America?
right on! HDTV looks cooler in the dark anyway!
hell yeah!!
Sooo…
I love the earth as much as the next overly enthusiastic sponge, however a whole hour out of the year… out of my life that I could be:
Running water (sinks, tubs)
Watching my HD TV with both my laptops on, surfing sweet websites.
All the lights on in my house.
Turntables spinning and stereo blasting all at the same time!
Sounds like the best time of my life.
Maybe next year.
So glad they got rid of Earth Day! ‘Earth Hour’ fits way better into my schedule.
I love Michael.
STEVE HOLT *throws arms up in a double air punch*,
Actually…Earth Hour is just about lights (though I question your need to have TVs, lap tops and turntables powered up all at once while…apparently in the shower.) So…sounds like you can have your loud water wasting party after all! Just keep the lights off.
Squishily,
Halfa
This event is GREAT for promoting environmental awareness. That said, it wreaks havoc on electric systems.
Very dumbed down, electric utilities build power plants based on consumers’ average demand for power. Power plants cannot simply be shut off. As a result, when demand dips below minimum output capacity, the plants have to “bleed” power into heating elements (read: giant toasters) and other facilities designed to disburse the excess power produced by the plants.
Again, I think it’s great that this event promotes awareness. It’s also ironic, however, since power is not really “saved” just because the lights go off for an hour one day a year. Spending twenty bucks on mini-flo bulbs, hanging your laundry out to dry and/or running your dryer during off-peak hours (at night), putting on a sweatshirt instead of husing heat, etc. are much more effective ways of reducing long-term electric usage (demand) and attendant carbon emissions.
Debbie Downer – Out.
An important issue to be aware of. Thanks.
Maybe it’s not so much a about saving electricity for one hour. Maybe it’s about becoming sensitive to how much we use electricity and to treat it with respect. As an Electrical Engineer, I want everyone to appreciate all the good things we have provided for the convenience and amusement of mankind. All things in moderation… One hour is moderate.
p.s. Great link to the video
Cindy and Josh! Thanks for your comments. Well thought out, well articulated…
Yes, indeed. All things in moderation! (Except ice cream)
